Tips For Improving Your English: "Keep A Journal!"

One of the easiest and most effective ways to improve your English is to simply keep a diary. You can type it out or upload it to a private blog and get someone to correct it or you can go the low-tech route and write it down in a notebook. Either way, it provides a great way to regularly use and practice your English. Among the many benefits, one of the most important is that it serves as a clear record and indication of one’s mistakes and weak areas. If you make that mistake in writing, there is a good chance that you make that mistake in speaking. Here are a few tips to help you benefit the most from your diary.

  1. Write about topics that you are interested in at that moment. You will write with less effort and it will be more enjoyable. Enjoying the process will be the determining factor in improvement.

  2. Don’t think too much when you are writing. You should try to write as you think. Don’t be concerned with grammar or making mistakes, in fact we want to use our diary as a way to identify our mistakes and weaknesses.

  3. If you don’t know the word or phrase that you want to express, just write it in your native language. Remember this is for your eyes only so don’t be afraid if it’s not perfectly written. Write unfamiliar vocabulary in your native language and search for those words when you are finished writing. This will automatically create a vocabulary list that is 100% personalized for you! How useful!

  4. Don’t overdo it. It would be a mistake to force yourself to write and 5 page diary everyday. Why? Because after some time, you will start to hate doing it and will inevitably quit. So how should we go about it? It’s hard to say but try starting out with 3 times a week writing for 10-15 minutes each time. You can adjust it to fit your preferences but the ideas is that it should never be tedious for you to do.

  5. If possible, have someone check it. This is not always possible, but whenever you can, ask a friend or someone good at English to correct it and/or offer suggestions.

Personally, keeping a journal in the languages that I've been learning has been an invaluable tool and I can't recommend it enough. I hope that writing gives you as many benefits as it has to me!
